This is what I said in the blog on ABC's site for Primetime. I did not agree with the way they portrayed things, and well, I had to say something, so here it is. I don't know how many agree with me, but it's just how I feel.
I have been a paranormal investigator for over 20 years. I admit I do not specialize in UFOlogy, but I do have knowledge of sleep paralysis. I found the alien episode of Primetime a bit condescending and the so-called experts very biased. Sleep paralysis is very rare in people before the age of 10. The twins, who I know personally were younger than that when their ordeal began. Sleep paralysis is usually at its peak during the 20's and by the late 30's to early 40's of a person's lifetime has usually disappeared. It is rare to find these cases in the age groups outside of those mentioned. Though it is possible for people to believe that things have happened to them that have not occurred while in the throes of a sleep paralysis event, I do not think this is the case 100% of the time. I will say that not every person who claims to have been abducted has actually been abducted, that many of them do suffer from sleep paralysis, but I do not agree that this is the case in every episode. Out of all the people who claim this a small percentage of those people, I do believe have had something happen to them, that does not involve sleep paralysis, though it may involve an induced paralysis from other sources. Let's say that 100 people claim to have been abducted by aliens and 90 of them suffer from sleep paralysis. It's a big number, but I want to be fair here. Well, then what happened to the other 10% of those people? OK, so that's only 10 people, but when you think that there are thousands who have claimed to have been abducted, that 10% looks a bit more daunting.
For some reason I felt as if this episode fell short of being fair to victims. One possible explanation was searched. A very good explanation, I will even admit. But I'm sorry, it does not explain every case, just as it does not in the paranormal field. There are exceptions to the rule in every part of this universe. It's time we start looking at the exceptions to the rule. When you take the shear numbers of sightings and alien abduction reports it adds up. It adds up an awful lot. If we keep closing our eyes and our minds we lose sight of the truth. Yes, sleep paralysis is a great explanation, but it's not the answer all the time, and it's not the only one.....
