Sometimes I think things happen for a reason. I decided today that I would run my errands while my son was out seeing a movie. I then decided as I was driving, cranking the tunes and singing at the top of my lungs that I'd go to the pet store first. After I'd paid for my purchase and laughed with the clerk about how I think my bird is trying to win an egg laying contest, I turned and found myself face to face with a Wampanoag!! You know me, I couldn't help but start talking to him and asking him questions!
What a nice man and by the time we were done speaking I had to hug him and thank him. He told me I'd be welcome at the upcoming pow wow in Mashpee, and I sure am going to try to make it there! It will be on the Fourth of July weekend and he said that on Sunday morning, when the sun is rising, they will be doing a naming ceremony. He told me that even people who aren't members of the tribe can receive a name, and that the spirits of the ancestors are present at the naming and it is them who do the actual naming.
He gave me some great contact information, that I'm sure will come in handy. For I've found that my heart is firmly set on writing about them, meeting more of the spirits who once lived here and just learning more about them. We stood there talking so long, that before I knew it a whole hour had passed and I have to say I enjoyed every moment of listening to his words! He told me being a Native American isn't necessarily blood, it's in the heart. I knew his words were true as soon as he said them, for every time I walk in the woods where once Wampanoag feet tread, I can feel it calling to me.
I don't think I can ever thank him enough for being so forthcoming with me. I'm sure he will probably never see this, for his says he really doesn't use a computer, but I wanted everyone else here to know that this man of the Turtle Clan had more heart than many people I've known for a long time. That he opened that heart to me in only a few moments. That before I left I had to hug him and thank him!
I know by his words that he was an undefeated boxer in his day, but I also know something else. He was named perfectly by the spirits, for when you look in his eyes, you can feel the quiet storm that resides in his heart!!
I told him of a secret that I own, a gift given to me by a spirit, that I have to keep a secret. He told me that it was given for a reason and if I use it the right way I can see things that otherwise I would not. I'm going to take his advice and I'm going to try to use it in the Native American way. Looking back now, I can see that it was given to me for just that reason!
(Just had to get that off my chest, and sometimes the only way I can do that is to write about it!)
