I took this picture was taken at one of our recent investigations (that means I can't tell you exactly where this place is). No flash was used in the first picture, and this area is not lit by any electric lights. Only used the natural light that was coming in behind me. This second picture is taken with a flash. This is called "The Safe Harbor". It is in a building here on Cape Cod. Both sides and the back of this "room" are the back sides of fireplaces. This space was used to hide slaves on their route to freedom. The opening to this area was originally a false wall with hooks on it which acted as a coat closet. When inspectors would come into the house searching for runaway slaves, they would hang their coats in this closet and look around the house, find nothing, then leave. A signal, late at night, from boats anchored off the beach would alert the owner's of the house to get the slaves out of their house and into boats waiting to take the slaves to the ships and onto freedom. This area looks like it would probably not fit more than 5 or 6 adults; but I am willing to bet that they could have managed 10 people in there. It is amazing when you find out the history that is in your own back yard. >^o.o^<

Awesome, lildeb!! I looove the Underground Railroad!! There's alot of houses in New Bedford that have tunnels for the slaves to hide in or be brought up from the harbor! I found that they are teaching more about this in the local schools and was happy to see that! The NB public schools actually have a nice booklet they made up about the Underground Railroad in NB, and let me tell ya, I read it much more carefully than my son did, LOL!! Thanks for sharing, I'm hoping to get to visit some of these tunnels in my area also!!

I'm getting to them as I find them. If I wait and hope and wish and whatever, I will never get there. Like my Mother always says...."strike while the iron is hot!"
Of course, if it is a residential property, the likelyhood for that happening lessens.

It's more of a time issue right now. If I have people who want or need help, they take priority over what I want to do. I also have found that the more I get around in my area, the more wonderful people I meet. So I may even end up inside the tunnels in a roundabout way, but that will probably be in the future! I have so much on my schedule right now, it's going to be a while before I can free up some time to do the things I'm interested in doing, LOL! Ain't that the way, though, too many things to do and not enough time to do them all in, LOL!!

Yeah, I know about busy schedules all to well. But you know what, life is too short to NOT do the things we are interested in.
A good friend of mine died last November, at 47, and she had put off a lot of things she wanted to do - now she will never get to do them. That sure as hell was a wake up call for me to either lighten my load of responsibilites and/or reprioritize what I want to do. And, every day, take time to have a little fun and do one thing, no matter how big or small, that I am interested in doing.
In the words of Yodah, "There is no try, only do or do not."
