To commemorate Cinco de Mayo this month’s creature is El Chupacabra!!!
The Chupacabra or Chupacabras is a creature that inhabits Southern American states, Puerto Rico and Mexico, Puerto Rico being the origin of reports. The name Chupacabras translates from Spanish as “goat-sucker”, named as such for allegedly sucking blood from livestock. Though many have claimed they were the first to use the name it cannot be determined who actually came up with the name Chupacabra. In 1992 the first reports of los Chupacabras were in Puerto Rico, where newspapers reported the killings of livestock with puncture wounds around their necks (including birds, horses, and goats) by a stange unidentified animal; deemed El Vampiro de Moca because the first reports were in the small town of Moca. After the killings in Moca,Puerto Rico deaths across the island were reported and spread to Central and South America, Mexico and the United States. Descriptions of the Chupacabra usually come in three forms. The First being lizard-like with scaly greenish skin and sharp spines or quills down its back. It stands 3-4 feet high and moves much like a kangaroo, with a panther -like face and forked tongue, large fangs and a pungent sulfuric odor. Second is much like the first with the exception of grayish, coarse fur and face much like a dog. Lastly the chupacabra is believed to be a strange breed of hairless wild dog that has a pronounced spinal ridge, eye sockets, teeth and claws. Thought to be a result of inbreeding between several different breeds of wild dogs. In all of these descriptions of El Chupacabra red eyes are common and believed to have the ability to hypnotize and paralyze their prey—the prey animal is mentally stunned, allowing the chupacabras to suck the animal's blood at its leisure. The effect is similar to the bite of the vampire bat or certain snakes or spiders that stun their prey with venom. Unlike conventional predators, the chupacabras sucks all the animal's blood (and sometimes organs) through a single hole or two holes. Please help control the Chupacabra population keep your wild dogs spayed or neutered. "And that............is as they say.............is that!?" info from: http://en.wikipedia.org

I had never heard of this creature before, and after reading this post I Googled the name. Amazing how many websites there are devoted to this creature. One site I came across was a story that ABC News put out on February 28, 2006 in Texas. Here's the link if anyone is interested. abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=1666701&page=1Also found that there was a movie about this creature back in 2003; according to people that have seen it, it's a cheesy horror flick that's not worth seeing - now I'm curious...LOL. But nice to know that Cinco de Mayo has a mascot.

I heard a report that these creatures have now been sighted in Russia. Might have heard it on Spooky Southcoast. There has also been speculation that this creature might be a result of genetic tampering done by the military or CIA.

El Chupacabra is a classic example of an ethnic montser/creatur/folktale. Why is it that it is only sighted in hispanic countries and areas? Is it mainly due to cultrual archetypes playing out in a mass psychological way? In other words, are people seeing (or thinking they're seeing) the same thing because that's what everyone else is?
Or is it a real creature? I find that one hard to beleive, from a cryptozoological standpoint. Puerto Rico and all of the other Caribbean islands have been settled for over 500 years, and clearcut many times over (think sugar plantations, etc.) I seriously doubt an unidentified creature could have been hiding out, Bigfoot style.
Could it be a military or government experiment gone wrong? Again, doubtful. Aside from the fact that the U.S. government currently is against genetic testing and cloning, and no other countries in the area have the capability, there just is no point in creating a creature like that. If it was done by the military,. it would be for its weapons potential. There isn't any. If it was created by private industry, where's the profit in it?
I think a test of the validity of these stories would be if Cuba has reported any sightings. Cuba is a vastly different society from the rest of the Caribbean, a closed society. If a chupacabra was seen there, it may counter any of these theories.

Good points mastershake. But there are reports of this creature having been spotted in Russia. And there is still the matter of what the heck is killing these animals and draining them of their blood? If you read the accounts of these attacks they're all pretty much the same. Animals totally drained of blood, no blood found around the scene and two puncture wounds. Folktale or not, there's something going on out there.
BTW Go Aquateens!

Ok, so I finally got around to listening to the webcast of last weeks show, and looked up the report from Russia. Maybe they're legitimate sightings. I just don't know why the international media didn't pick up the story. The only place I could find it was in Mosnews and Pravda. "The Highlander was a documentary, and the events happened in real time!" doubleparker.com/shake/

If the sighting in Russia is legit, I'd bet that the Russian Academy of Sciences will investigate. The Russians (and Soviets) have always been more open about investigating the paranormal.
