I'd like to talk a little about horror films and get some feedback from you guys on maybe a good or bad one that you've seen. But first I'd like to ask if anyone has any opinions on recent remakes of movies? [/color] [/move]

I love horror movies, especially the older ones. Take something like Alfred Hitchcok's 'Psycho' or 'The Birds'. Those movies, to this day, puts my fright meter on high. Hitchcok was a genius! He knew how to scare people without the gore that you see in the newer horror movies. Instead of having the blood and guts right there in front of you, we were forced to use our imaginations; and imagination can be more frightening than mindlessly taking in the blood and guts that is put before you on the screen.
As far as remakes - I see that as Hollywood's way of saying, 'We don't have any good ideas right now, so lets take a classic film that made lots of money once upon a time, remake it, and call it new and improved. More than likely it will be a smash hit once again.' The same thing as when singers remake classic songs.
Granted, special effects are far superior than they were 20, 30, 40 years ago; but a bad movie with new and improved special effects is still a bad movie. And a good movie with new and improved speical effects can make that movie loose it's initial scare quality and make it look like every other 'new horror movie'. Then again, maybe imaginations are not what they once were and that could be one of the many reasons to make abominations out of the classics.
I'm sure there are some good remakes out there; but, why fix it if it already works? >^..^<

I agree with the last post. I think Hollywood is just plain out of ideas. The last remake I saw was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it was a decent film, but nowhere near as creepy and atmospheric as the original. I quit seeing remakes after that.

Its true most remakes just plain suck but sometimes they do it right and they add a new dimension to the story cases in point: the Thing 1952 compared to the Thing 1982 or the Fly '58 and '86 in those cases the remake was better and it told the story in a different way. In a lot of cases these retelling of stories also gives attention back to the original films that were otherwise forgotten by the mainsream and many who watch the remake will head down to the video store the next day and check out the original.

Yup, very true - I have to admit that I have the original and the remake of Little Shop of Horrors. The original is strange weird; the remake is just silly weird. But I was compelled to have both. Not in my list of favorite movies, but at three in the morning when insomnia holds me prisoner they sometimes :-/make sense . Amazing what lack of sleep can do to you - LOL. I guess some remakes are better, like The Fly--creepy but like you said Matt, most remakes just plain suck! >^..^<

I'll take Hitckok's Horror flicks over pretty much all of the new stuff. Even after all these years, his movies still put a good scare into me. got to love the classics. >^o.o^<

I was not impressed by it. I am one of those people who loves to watch horror movies, even the bad ones. This one was just not that good at all. And I love the Bell Witch Haunting as a story! But, if you are like me then you have to see it anyways! haha

I'm a big movie person who is open minded on all movies good and bad, I can see the good things in every movie, and I was able to find the little things in American Haunting. If you step back and look at as something completely seperate from the bell witch history it can be a decent idea it was just to...I wanna say they tried to hard to put the scarey elements in it I dont know how to put it. But I do have to say, I loved the scene with the carage(probably wrong spelling) flipping.

I would say if you want to see what I thought was a pretty good scary movie based on a true story (and if you're like me - once a Catholic, always a Catholic) is "The Exorcism of Emily Rose". Scared the crap out of me.
Where it gets really interesting to me is that the woman that the story is based on (it took place in Germany in the mid-70's) is being considered for sainthood. The movie details that the Blessed Mother appears to her and offers her respite from being possessed and she makes a concious decision to continue to suffer so that no one else will suffer the same pain of the possession.
For sheer, scary creepiness. "Nosferatu", in it's orginial format, without sound it the scariest monster movie around. Bar none.

Hey they are making a new dead movie it is "Diary Of the Dead" and it is a Romero Film
"According to the Hollywood Reporter, the dead are rising again. Horror maven George A. Romero has signed on to write and direct "George A. Romero's DIARY OF THE DEAD," following in the tradition of his 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead." With a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series, the film will follow a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches.
After going more than two decades without making an independently financed zombie film, Romero told his production partner Peter Grunwald he was frustrated working within the system. "I was trying to convince Peter we could just run off and do it ourselves," he said. Instead they convinced Artfire Films to finance the under-$5 million project, enough to work with union crew members who've been longtime friends.
Romero's new script replaces the original's static-filled radio with new technologies like smartphones to inform characters of impending doom. But fans can expect the classic Romero style. "It has my sensibility, my sense of socioeconomic satire," he said. "And it has my zombies! They're not rushing around -- they're gonna be moving slow." Added Grunwald, "There'll be a lot of howling."
The film's four-week shoot is scheduled to begin October 11 in Toronto. "Dead" is just the latest in a series of films with a recurring theme for Romero, including 1978's "Dawn of the Dead," 1985's "Day of the Dead" and 2005's "Land of the Dead." His other credits include 1982's "Creepshow," 1973's "The Crazies" and the 1974 TV documentary "O.J. Simpson: Juice on the Loose."

I saw "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" when it first came out. I liked the movie, but was not as good as I had hoped. Most of the scarey parts were shown in the trailer on tv; I hate it when they do that. Like I said, I liked the movie, but it is not one that I am planning on adding to my collection at home.
