As always, Whaling City Ghosts was very excited to be invited to join the Spooky Crew at Lizzy Borden’s house. We arrived early and began to prepare for the night, Mr. Alexander from SoCo magazine also arrived early and soon LeeAnn Wilbur, a co-owner of the infamous bed and breakfast came to let us in. Beforehand, while waiting, Gabby handed me a specially selected assortment of crystals in a sweet little velvet blue bag. We are very open to experimenting with different methods, and are working out a protection scheme for both of us in the field. Putting these in my pocket, I trusted to Gabby’s intuition and trusted her judgment. Later, I found out first hand, she picked some great crystals, for the entities didn’t seem to like them. A recorded evp says something to the effect of, “they have rocks…..rocks like knives”. At first I couldn’t figure out what they were talking about, but on sending this on to Gabby, it didn’t take her long to figure out. She simply stated, “We had crystals in our pockets!”
As usual WCG did a sweep of the house for temperature readings and emf fields. We are sorry to report that soon after beginning we had an emf detector failure and could not proceed for the rest of the night. (If anyone is interested in donating to WCG for more equipment, we would be grateful!) Temperature readings were steady throughout the house and had a four degree range. Rooms were anywhere from 68 degrees Fahrenheit to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. We were very disappointed that we could not run emf readings, for we feel that in conjunction with other readings and actual phenomena it is important to note any electro-magnetic fields that are present. Though we do a lot of experimentation we do feel that emf detection can help solidify any evidence that happens to come up. We ran both digital still cameras, Gabby, our video specialist ran her video camera, and we both had digital audio recorders running all night.
By approximately 7:45 we had begun our investigation in the Abby murder room, also know as the John Morse room. Tim, of the Spooky Crew has reported a ‘pushing’ phenomena that occurs there, and though I have witnessed this phenomena happening to others, I had never experienced it myself. Though during another investigation a different phenomena happened to me, that I can’t report on until a certain television show airs, during a previous investigation done with Shadow Land Investigators, the Spooky Crew, and WCG. Spooky Crew may say that they are not ‘true investigators’ but I am always impressed with their professionalism. During the time that we were in the room, they tried to disprove this phenomena. Matt Moniz, not having a true level, made one. He put water in a plastic cup with lines on it, placed it on the floor and determined that the floor was indeed level. Unfortunately, WCG could not take emf readings throughout this experiment, but could provide temperature readings. Most of us took a shot at trying to be pushed, and when it came to my turn, I announced that I wouldn’t let it push me. I bore down hard, spread my legs a bit into an almost sanchen-like stance (karate days, heehee) and bore all my weight as hard as I could. What I can report about this phenomena is that is was very strange. As I would push forward, I could feel something pushing back, almost as if it were holding me up. I would get to the point where I was almost overbalanced and should fall forward, but this ‘force’ held me up. Then sure enough, it would push me back to the point where I’d rock on my feet and almost lose my balance. After experiencing this phenomena myself, I can’t come up with all that many explanations. One theory I have is that maybe an emf field is present in that spot and it creates a force that can feel like a push, or possibly make you lose your equilibrium. I do not feel that this theory is correct, for though you do get the pushing sensation, I felt completely normal. I did not feel dizzy, or disoriented, and was in full capacity of my bodily functions, and could control my own pushing against this unseen force.
Approximately 30 to 40 minutes later, Colleen Johnson, whom WCG has met before on a previous investigation and Elizabeth Nowicki, whom we had not met yet, arrived. Elizabeth joined us in the murder room. She told us that Mr. Borden doesn’t like strangers in his home. I have to agree with Jay Alexander on this one, strange things did begin to occur, and some very interesting evp’s came during the rest of the time in this room. Drops in temperature were noted, Elizabeth reported that Andrew was getting angry, and stated that Mrs. Borden is a bit more shy and somewhat modest. Gabby, the lead investigator and head of research for WCG tried an experiment during this time, asking the spirits to make the temperature drop. They actually did bring the temperature down to 62 degrees over a period of minutes. There is some evp evidence that also occurred at this exact time. Gabby is coaching the entity to bring the temperature down, in degrees and at one point asks if they can bring it down to 65. There is an answer on our RCA recorder that responds, “Sixty-five…….I’m trying.” This particular room was about 75 degrees to start out with. When all was said and done, yes we got a 12 degree drop in temperature for no apparent reason that we can define.
As all of this was taking place, Elizabeth stated that Andrew was getting angry. She reported that he was poking her in the back. She described it as someone pointing their finger and poking her in the back. At one point, she cried out in pain. Gabby and myself became concerned. Though this was our first meeting with her, she seemed like just a darned sweet person in general, and we both hated to see her hurt, and also wanted to find a reasonable explanation for what she reported. We also, of course, had to take note, for any foul play on anyone’s side. When we pulled her shirt back on the spot where she said Mr. Borden was poking her, we revealed some nasty looking welts and scratches. They looked as if they had just occurred. There was also a 10 degree difference in temperature between her right and left shoulders. Other than Elizabeth pulling the wool over all our eyes, and making the welts ahead of time, I can not give you an explanation for these welts. I do not think this is the case, she was, as I said before, a very sweet person. She was open to helping us, and seemed fearful to provoke the wrath of “Mr. Borden”. I must add, these welts looked extremely fresh, as if they had just occurred. Gabby is an EMT and I’d say she would agree with me on this case. Soon after, we left this room to continue gathering evidence in other parts of the house. Later review of the pictures I took during this time show one strange anomaly centered around Elizabeth’s head. It was a low-light shot, aimed at Elizabeth. There is an orange glow around where her head would be. I doubt that it was a street light, for it would have lit the whole window, and not just a small area around her head. The picture is posted for everyone’s perusal.
By approximately 9:45 we moved on to the Chimney Room, or Hosea Knowlton room. This room has a strange occurrence that happens. A spirit is known to lift your legs if you lay crosswise on the bed, with your legs hanging over. WCG didn’t note much of a temperature difference early on in this room. Tim began to provoke this entity and there are some corresponding evp’s that defy explanation, and some that are downright creepy. These voices that were recorded were quite rude in some of their responses and use expletive language. They also call him a name that begins with “a” and ends with “hole”. There is some sort of pig squeal, as I describe it, that I can not explain, and is not any of our equipment. Though the spirit did not succeed in bringing any of the experimenter’s legs all the way up, as they had on previous tries here, it did bring some of them up a few inches. When Colleen Johnson tried, she reported feeling cold around one of her feet. Tim, using the WCG’s thermal scanner, reported a lowering temperature phenomena around her feet. Though we could see a slight impression on her toe, we could not encourage it to raise her legs. I will post pictures I have of her foot, but I’m not sure how well you can make out the impressions, not knowing her natural foot shape, and all.
Later, I was outside with Colleen, who you can’t help but take a liking to, having a well deserved cigarette break. Colleen was discussing some personal experiences that she’s had outside of Lizzy Borden’s house. As we were talking, I was fooling around mostly, shooting my thermal scanner around outside. I shot upwards toward the house and low and behold, it was suddenly 32 degrees on a hot summer, August night. Intrigued, I scanned around a bit more, and found this oddity only occurred above us, toward the house. The porch is covered with a small roof, it is open to the wind. I examined the area, looking for a vent, or some other reason why I would have this reading. No other area produced this anomaly. Colleen began asking if it could drop it more. It complied and brought the temperature down to a whopping 29 degrees Fahrenheit. I can offer you no explanation for this, try as I might to find a source for this strange temperature drop.
It was approaching 11 o’clock by this time and Matt Moniz decided to set up a new little infrared camera he’d purchased up in the chimney room. (Oh, and Matt, give me back my screwdriver, LOL!) Full of nasty delivery pizza, we all sat and watched the video running from Matt’s handy-dandy little camera. Elizabeth and Colleen stood in the doorway, quietly talking amongst themselves. As we watched the video feed, an audible whisper was heard from the room. Not much after as we had all tried to figure out where this sound had come from, the video view suddenly jumped left, pointing at the legs of the pair in the doorway. I immediately asked if someone had stepped on a wire. Getting up with my belly full of pizza like a rock, I entered the room. Using my flashlight, I noted that the wire was well behind where they were standing and ran along the wall to where the camera was set up on an old chest. I tried methodically to make the wire move the camera. I stepped on it, I jumped on it, I pushed it forward with my feet, I pulled it back with my feet. I tried brushing it from side to side, and pulled and pushed the wire with my hands. To now avail, the camera didn’t move. Setting the camera up again, I asked Matt if the view was good for him. He told me just a ‘c-hair’ more, and well, I guess I’m not good with measuring c-hairs, for I went a bit too much to the right, and had to re-adjust the view a bit more to the left. Once Matt was satisfied with the view, I stood over the camera, with the wires between my spread legs. I made sure the camera was set up between two ribs, flat on the chest, firmly, so it could not be moved because of its set up. I had just turned out my flashlight, and as I waited for my eyes to adjust to the darkness, I heard clearly, the sound of the camera, once again being moved. I admit, I was a bit frustrated that it happened during my momentary blindness, for I didn’t see the movement, only heard it. This video footage can be seen on the Spooky Southcoast blog, and I can offer you no explanation for this activity. I know I was standing with the wire between my legs, I know I did not move, I waited patiently, and very still, hoping that I would SEE this phenomena in action. That cord didn’t move, the camera did. The only explanation I can offer, is that this indeed was paranormal in nature. Did some spirit move this camera? I’d have to say, yes, I very much think so.
Around midnight we move into the dining room, which is where the bodies of Andrew and Abby were kept for autopsies and the laying out for funeral services. Elizabeth has opened séances here in the past, and we wanted to observe this. Gabby remained outside the circle, and video taped our progress. Though I sat at the table with the others, I was not an active participant. This being the second official investigation done at the Borden house, I’d have to say, yes, the Bordens are alive and present, but I also have to say I feel ‘something else’ is present also, and they are not so positive. I have to say my opinion of this house is that there is some sort of drama going on there to this day. Do the murders play themselves out over and over, and the Bordens are helpless to do anything but stay and watch, or participate? Do these other ‘things’ hold them there? Are these ‘things’ a product of the murders, or did they help cause them? These are questions that have entered my mind since setting foot into the Borden house. I can’t offer answers yet, but hope maybe with time, and more investigation, maybe we can get closer to answers. I also can’t offer an explanation as to why the table moved in the way that it did. I tried to discount this in any way I could. I watched Colleen and Elizabeth like an eagle, and could not find that they were moving the table in any way. I shone my flashlight beneath the table, watching for anyone’s legs or feet pushing the table. I could not find any evidence of foul play, but for some reason, the table seemed to want to push toward Tim. I can only say, they don’t seem to like him. Not only were they verbally abusive toward him, which was later revealed as I reviewed the audio evidence, but they seemed to want to push the table at him. My conclusion is that I could not find any evidence of foul play on anyone’s part, and am at a loss to tell you what caused the table to want to ‘attack’ Tim in such a way. Though I do admit the bangs could have been due to the flimsy nature of this old, wooden table. I admit, during this time, worry for these employees did enter my mind. They did not invoke any protection at all before, during, or after this séance. This is something I’d like to speak to them about. I am fond of all the employees there that I’ve had the privilege to meet, and would like for them to find protections for themselves. I really have to say, I didn’t like seeing those welts on sweet Elizabeth’s back. I do believe there are ways to protect yourself, and must say WCG uses their own methods of protection, and stick with them. If anyone from Lizzy Borden’s Bed and Breakfast does read this, please feel free to contact me, I’d be happy, and feel better about your safety if we could discuss methods of protection for you all!! As I think my life and experiences will tell, no one has to be hurt or frightened by spirits from the other side. I do believe we have choices!!
Our last stop for the night was the basement. Smells of cigar smoke and rotten meat have been reported down here, and I have to admit, yes, I did get some evidence down there on the previous investigation we did here, but I can’t spill the beans….yet. There is a high emf reading normally in the basement. It is where all electrical circuit boxes are located and many bare wires and pipes run along the ceiling. Unfortunately, as stated above, WCG had an emf failure this night, and could not record this scenario for you. I can not say that this phenomena causes any of the activity we’ve previously recorded down here, but I can say, being in the basement makes you feel very uncomfortable, and I feel a tingling, singing sensation in all my nerves. This can be caused by the high emf readings, or it can be caused by spirit activity. The best I can offer at this time is that WCG would like to do more experimentation in the basement as time and investigations allow. At this investigation, WCG did not record any evidence of paranormal activity in the basement. But that is not to say that it doesn’t happen.
All in all, WCG agrees with SoCo magazine’s description of this property as “hotbed of activity”. After reviewing the evidence and hearing the evp’s recorded that night we do feel there is quite a bit of spirit activity in this infamous house. We also believe that by mixing the psychic senses with science, and so forming “psy-ence” we will be able to collect more data as time goes on, here in Lizzy’s former home. Do I think Lizzy and her family still reside here? Yes, I do. I also believe the evp we recorded that states in an old sounding accent is the voice of Lizzy herself, when she tells us, “I’m a good daughter.” Does this mean she didn’t commit these murders, so many years ago? Well, I’m beginning to form my own theories based on evidence I’ve gathered not only this time, but for Shadow Land Investigators on a previous investigation for a television show they are working on. I have to admit, I’ve begun to doubt and to wonder. Did Lizzy really do this? I’d have to ask Lizzy herself, and would she admit it, if she did have a hand in the murders of her parents? Do I believe the Bordens are still in residence? I’d have to say, yes, I do believe this, but I also believe there is more here. Of what nature they are, I’d have to say, time, and more investigations will tell. But I suspect yes, there are some negative entities here, also. Did they help cause the murders, are they a product of the murders? I don’t know as of yet, but I’m willing to try to find out…..
A special thank you to SoCo Magazine for having us, and to the Spooky Crew, for inviting us! As always, a very special thank you to the owners and employees of Lizzy Borden's Bed and Breakfast, you guys are great!
