My partner mmecurie and I were in Rehoboth Village Cemetery tonight. What a beautiful, starry, wonderful night we picked to go cemetery hopping! We actually stayed a bit longer than we intended to since were having such a great time. At one point, we sat in the grass talking quietly and just getting a good feel of the peaceful atmosphere in this quiet, ancient graveyard. As we sat, I saw a white mist move between the stones, but wasn't quick enough to catch it on film. Mme heard a male voice, and I had thought I had heard a male voice also, toward the back of the area we were sitting in. Many times I called out to Catherine, telling her to come out, we wouldn't hurt her, and that she didn't have to be abused in the afterlife. I told her husband, whose name I do not know that he didn't have to stay in the cycle of abuse either. We decided that we'd been out there for a bit longer than we'd planned and headed out. As we did, mme swore she heard a male voice. I stopped to take a few shots, then moved on, when I did, I heard a man's voice, low and sort of raspy say what I'm pretty sure was 'hello'. Turning back, I called out to him to come out, or to talk to me, that he didn't have much time for we were leaving. I took four random shots in different directions but in the general area that I'd heard the voice. This is the last shot I took. I see something behind the big square stone that looks human shaped in nature, and is not one of the other stones, it's just too close. Right behind that particular stone, there aren't any other stones, there's a road. So, what do ya think this could be? Apparition?? Mist on a very low humidity night in New England?? I don't know, but you take a guess! (I'll also have more pics for you soon, but it's midnight, we just got in, and I'm just giving you this, since I found it so interesting, before I hit the hay....hard!)

I enhanced the picture. You are right, I do not think it is a grave stone either. Looks like a bush or a small tree; I can see the leaves on it.

I was there, it's not a tree. The only tree in that vicinity is the most beautiful chestnut tree, all in flower, but it's huge. Only things other than the tree, were the stones you can see. There's nothing else over there behind that stone except a dirt road.

Here's that tree, the chestnut I was talking about, it's gorgeous!! What I have highlighted here is the same stone from above, but at a different angle and time. This was when we first arrived at the cemetery, the one with the anomoly in it is from the end after mme and I had both heard a male voice, at different times. A few random shots. Lovely little flower orb, eh? LOL, I have no clue what caused it, but can't help but think it's sort of cute.

I was in Dighton over the weekend visiting friends. One thing lead to another and while we were out, they brought me over to the Village Cemetery in Rehoboth. While walking around, I found the headstone that was in your picture (the rose bush on it and the tree helped to identify it). Anyway, looks like your ‘man’ in the picture possibly turned out to be nothing more than a combination of flowers at the base of the stone, a small bush and/or other stones in the background. Night time photography can cause all kinds of illusions in a photograph; and enhancing a photo can make it worse at times. I know that my picture is not at the same angle; but what is in the background needs to be considered. When taking pictures at night, I always suggest that, if possible, go back to the area in daylight and retake pictures. It is also important to invest in a good flashlight and carry it with you so that you can check out the surrounding area and jot down a note or take a mental note of what is in the area that caused a question in your pictures. Got to love digital cameras and being able to see your pictures right away. It is an interesting cemetery; but not very peaceful. Maybe that was because of the many fairly new graves (I think I counted 8) in there. Interesting to see that small graveyard down the hill where the town vault is; it was very peaceful. Is that part of the larger graveyard or a separate one?

I don't think that's what caused it, but I will get back there as soon as I have a chance. In the darkness a camera doesn't have the same range as it does in the daytime. It's fun, so I don't mind going back and messing with pics! And, it's much more peaceful at night! The angle I was shooting from, wouldn't pick up that bush, it would be out of the shot. In your angle, the bush is behind the stone, but in my angle, that bush wouldn't even be in the shot. I was standing to the left of that tree, so got sort of a right facing angle.
Too bad the flowers weren't still on that tree, it was so beautiful all in flower like that. I believe the vault was part of the original cemetery. There was a church or meetinghouse right in the middle of the cemetery at one time. It was taken down and moved quite a long time ago. I'd have to find my notes for the specific dates. It was too hard in the darkness to see if we could find any evidence of the building.
I think back in the day, all cemeteries had a vault like that, so when people died in the winter, and the ground was too hard to bury them, they could store the body and wait for spring. It is set way off from the rest, but there is another small plot down there too. If I find out more, I'll let ya know!
