One night as I was sleeping I had a terrible dream. I was on rolling hills on a dirt road. Black clouds stormed overhead as I ran from something that was chasing me. I didn't know what it was but I knew I didn't want it to catch me. I kept running and I came to a forest. It was nightmarishly frightening and forboding but there was no where else to run. I couldn't turn around or I'd run right into the being that was chasing me. As I ran through the forest, I saw a church steeple up ahead. I knew if I could just make it there before this thing caught me I'd be alright.
As I came to the little church I noticed how beautiful it was. It was the one thing in my dream that was not black and scary. It was made of dark wood and its steeple reached for the sky. The sides were lined with beautiful stained glass windows. I opened the heavy wooden door and looking back over my shoulder I entered the church. Inside was even more beautiful than the outside. The light shining through the window turned the floor to a mosaic of color. The pews were hand carved works of art with scrolling vines and flowers on their backs. I felt myself breathing easier and I began to relax. I turned my head from side to side examining the inside of the church.
As I strode up the center aisle, distracted for a moment by the beauty around me, the floor suddenly exploded before my very feet. I was rooted to the spot and couldn't move to run as from the gaping hole in the floor a huge grim reaper emerged. It had a black robe and hood, within the hood, there was no face only darkness. As I stood paralyzed with fear it raised its arms and pulled back its hood. As I watched it exposed its gruesome face that was a skull with putrefied flesh still attached but as I watched it began to melt. Going from somewhat flesh to shining bone and staring eyeballs. As it melted I became afraid that I too would melt along with it for it had me in its stare. I struggled up from sleep to escape this nightmare.
As I came up from the dream, I felt the familiar footsteps on the end of my bed and knew I wasn't alone. I was already panicked from my dream so I reacted in the exact opposite of how I had learned to react in order to get free of it quicker. I rushed to throw myself out of bed and run down the hall, but I was too slow and it pushed me back down onto the bed violently. It sat upon my chest and would not let me move. My adrenaline from the dream was pumped up and I made the mistake of struggling. It took a bit of time before I came to my senses and relaxed.
Finally, it released its grip on me. I was a bit tired from my exertions so I rested a moment listening to the quiet trying to be sure it had gone. As I rose to a sitting position I happened to look down at the bed next to me. There next to me, with its head on the spare pillow lay the grim reaper!!! It was my blanket and somehow it had made itself into the same exact shape as the grim reaper from my dream, right down to the dark shadowy space where a face should have been!! My heart nearly jumped right out of my chest as I leaped from the bed, grabbed the blanket and threw it to the floor. I kicked it and pummeled it with my fists just to make sure it was dead. I picked it up again and threw it in a heap in the corner.
Needless to say, at this point I was pretty freaked out. I ran throughout the house turning on all the lights as I went. I sat on the couch surrounded by light smoking cigarettes until I had calmed down. I kept telling myself it had only been a dream. The whole grim reaper in my bed was just my imagination due to the nightmare and then the attack. In the end, very sleeping and calling myself a very imaginative fool, I returned to bed and fell asleep.
Only to fall into the very same dream. The very same grim reaper, only this time as his face melts, he grabs me with his skeletal hands and begins to pull me closer. I wake feeling as if I'm suffocating. And to footsteps on my bed! This time the panic in me was so strong I almost made it out of the bed before it got its grasp on me. But to my dismay it threw me back down violently. This time I fought tooth and nail for I had definitely lost control by this time. Finally I got control of myelf enough to begin the process of calming myself that leads to being released. It seemed like forever that my bed shook until it finally decided it had fed enough and let me be.
This time I was exhausted as I climbed out of my bed. Only to glance down and see my blanket had somehow climbed back in bed with me and re-formed itself into the grim reaper again! I'm going to admit, I lost it at this point. I kicked the crap out of that poor blanket, again I threw it in the corner when I was done with my fit. Again I went into the living room to sit and contemplate the events that had just occured. I smoked many cigarettes as I thought about it, and in the end, I had myself pretty convinced that it was the same dream. That I hadn't woken up the first time. That I hadn't thrown the blanket in the corner after all. I must have just dreamed I did. Dreamed the whole thing. Right down to getting up, then going back to bed.
This all sounded really great to my poor mind. It hadn't happened, it was all just a dream. That was when I realized, all the lights in the house were still on. I HAD gotten up the first time, and I HAD turned on all the lights. My blanket HAD been thrown in the corner and then somehow HAD gotten back into my bed with me.
The next morning as soon as it was light. I took that blanket, walked out to the dumpster and threw it in. I didn't glance back once as I walked back to the house.
So to answer a post on another thread, I do believe a spirit can enter your dreams and even effect them. I believe that a strong enough spirit can use this to scare its victim. I think any entity that uses these methods to invoke fear are ones that need to be dealt with, quickly, cleanly and without looking back. Kind of like throwing out a blanket.
