Wow! I don't think we'll ever get the truth if it was a flying saucer that crashed. Darn, I'd love to know what really crashed there!

As long as it didn't land on my house, I don't care what it was.
Besides, if it was a UFO, and that information was spread throughout the world, society would not be able to handle the information. Better we do not know for sure, and just keep wondering; and a week from now it will just be a distant memory. ;D

There have been a number of crashes in Russia over the last 50 years. From Smerlov, and hight 611 in Vladivostok to Kaputin Yar (Russia's area 51) To have another come down there would not surprise me. What does surprise me is that there still is the quite "outdated "thinking buy people I consider very smart out there, that think this news would" Cause society to collapse ". Even after a decades of official polls around the world clearly show that over 80% of the worlds population think it would not effect how they live. Sorry Deb, no offense.

Well, if it wasn't a UFO (i.e., another country's spy vs. spy hardware or plane) then the Russians would not want to advertise what came down before they get a chance to rip it apart and extract what technology and information they can.
It creates a bit of an embarrasing situation for the country of origin, because they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar and they want time to try and get their stuff back before the Russians have a chance to rip it apart and strip it down. If a covert extraction isn't possible, then the "diplomatic" channels start running heavy.
If it was manned, a spy plane, and they knew they were going to have to make a crash landing in hostile territory, while the pilots are figuring out what to do, everyone else on the crew is busy ripping apart and destroying as much as they possibly can to keep a hostile government from being able to obtain any information. They already know that they are going to be picked up and interrogated as enemies of the state, even if the countries involved are technically "allies".
If it was truly a UFO, as in an ETI craft, then still, they are going to want to examine it, rip it apart and strip it down, and they aren't going to want to share with anybody else. Anything that might benefit "national security" and/or geopolitical dominance is going to be held close to the vest.

I do not think society would collapse; but there is probably a large section of society that would go off the deep end with proof of UFOs. And the panic that the mainstream media would cause--OY! It would all be more annoying than anything else. No offense taken Matt . >^o.o^<

Then there'd be the movie cliche question - would the aliens be
a) like "ET" or "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" where mankind all benefits
or
b) like "Independence Day" or "Signs" where we all get screwed?
or
c) apathetic like the Vogons in "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (novel and BBC radio and tv series NOT that travesty of a movie) who just want to demolish Earth to make way for the Hyperspace Bypass?

Well, I'm voting for a) I'd much rather not get blown away by some freaky creatures, or have to make way for any old Hyperspace Bypass!!!

Ooh - I loved "V" - that was really my first Sci-Fi soap opera mini-series.
Aside from re-runs of "Twilight Zone" and my first paranormal-addict series - "In Search Of". I was a little too young to remember "Dark Shadows" when it was originally aired.

Dark Shadows was a good show. Used to watch it every day with my Mother. I can remember looking at maps trying to find Collinswood, Maine. - LOL

LOL! I'm just old enough to remember it a little bit. My sister was a bit older than I was, and she was hooked on it, LOL! As a matter of fact, she used to look at me in the night, cross her armns over her chest and smile in the darkness at me. I could see the two 'fangs' she had gotten by flying over the handlebars of her bike, and tell me, "Just go to sleep Ane, it's ok, I'm a vampire, and while you're asleep, I'm going to suck all your blood. And then you'll be a vampire, too!" I'd seen enough of Dark Shadows to realize, my sister was a bona fide vampire, LOLOL, so I didn't rest until I had myself my own vampire cursing crucifix to wear on my neck, and especially, to bed, LOL! Now that I think of it, I'm surprised I'm not scarred for life, LOL!! I'd go to sleep each night clutching my crucifix, just in case my sis got hungry in the night!!!

Classic. I used to make my younger sister drink my science experiment "potions" I concocted from random refrigerator ingredients (ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and horseradish for example). Heh heh heh.
