Last night was a great presentation, and a remark someone made got me to thinking. I'm sorry I didn't say it then, but I haven't spoken in public since my college days, so I choked, LOL! The remark was basically that the sightings of paranormal events in Freetown had something to do with alcohol and cannibis. What I was thinking is you could probably blame some of the sightings on this some of the time, especially the ones in the Freetwon State Forest, since we all know a bit of partying has been done out there. But you can't blame all of the sightings on that all of the time.
Some may not be aware but I started researching the paranormal 16 years ago. It started out very scientifically, I read many books by M.D's, PhD's and other science professionals. I really wanted to find a logical explanation for things that had happened to me. The alternative was just too scary, and well, all too real for me. But the science could not give me the answers and I was left wanting. Soon I began to interview people in the area with alleged hauntings and sightings of spirits. I was amazed at similarities that seemed to keep coming through. Instead of finding answers, I found more questions. But one thing that did seem to keep coming up in my mind was that it must be something to do with this area, maybe even the ground it sits on. And I may not be far from right on that part.
You see, though Freetown may have gotten a negative reputation because of the cult activity in the forest, it is not the only place that has reports of hauntings. Freetown is not alone in being a veritable hub of paranormal activity. I interviewed people in Acushnet, New Bedford, Fairhaven, Westport and Wareham, I learned a bit about the history and found that this area is much older, and has a very much bloodier past than I'd been led to believe from my school days. Not only does it have a violent past, it sits on a geological oddity, a high concentration of quartz sits below the surface. Many of us know the significance of this, but if you don't, it's believed that high concentrations of quartz can help store energy and can even cause high EMF readings.
Yes, this was brought up, and it was asked if false positives could be produced because of this feature of our area. I think yes, there could be false positives caused by the high EMF's in the area, but it can also help to cause real activity. Just like in a home with faulty wiring, a natural EMF field can cause people to feel dizzy, as if they are being watched, or to hallucinate. But are all the sightings here hallucinations, or the product of abused substances?? I have to say, no, not all the time!
People of the historical society I'm sure know how bloody our past was. King Phillip's War was mentioned, and I think that is a good example of what the white man went through to procure this land for their home countries. I'd like to mention a story I know of that is one of my favorites, for it touches my heart for the poor woman who lived it hundreds of years ago. In the Pauchaug State Forest in Connecticut there is a story of a wailing woman. It is said that she is an Indian woman who was forced to watch her husband and children murdered before she was raped and then murdered herself by Redcoats. It is said she can still be heard wailing through the forest over the loss of her family. Heart wrenching and sad, yes, true, I don't know. But I must say, very possible. And it's just one example of the brutality that one human being could act out on another human being. Do things like that cause hauntings? Yes, in some cases, I think they do. They may not even be aware hauntings that have intelligence and can react to living humans, but even a residual haunting is an event that still cannot be explained. Is it a psychic event held in the crystal below the surface and re-played when activated? I think very probably, that many of our hauntings are just that.
But then we come to intelligent hauntings. Can a person be brutalized or traumatized enough to leave a piece of their psyche here on earth, even while their physical shell has rotted and turned to dust? Well, I think yes. Many of my recent experiments have to do with just that, removing my psyche or consciousness from my physical body. All I can say, without getting into a long discussion about these experiments, is yes, the spirit, psyche or consciousness, if you will, can be removed from the physical body. It's not even that hard, just some exercises and an open willing mind, a partner or two to verify your experiences and there you go, one psyche removed from physical body.
But all of my rantings are just food for thought. They are hopes that some of the more close minded will open their minds to the possibilities. I also don't want Freetown to feel as if it's alone in its reputation of being terribly haunted. This whole area seems to have a high concentration of haunted activity. So no, it's not the rantings of a bunch of stoners. Many of the people I interviewed were highly intelligent, professional people, who even had a hard time speaking of their experiences. Some of them wouldn't even talk to me unless I promised anonymity or not to even repeat their stories. Some of them seemed highly distressed by their experiences, for this will rock even the most stalwart person's faith!
But I think all of this really boils down to the fact that we sit smack dab in the middle of an area with quite a past, and well, to go along with the past, some excellent examples of hauntings. I think many factors specific to our area help to boost the activity and the history seals it in the cycle of time. But really if you think about it, there is no such thing as time, so what we may have is layers of time on top of each other, that every now and then, reach our layer. But no matter what an actual haunting is, I think our area needs to embrace its history and its hauntings. I believe we can learn by looking at our history and seeing it for what it is. I also believe by embracing it, we fully embrace what we are ourselves. For all we really are is ghosts, with living bodies, in my eyes. And it's only a matter of time before each and every one of us embraces our own ghost.
So I hope in hearing our own Spooky Crew's presentation last night, that the residents of Freetown (and Assonet) will embrace the history and the hauntings of our area. For we are some of the most fortunate people in the country. Not only do we live on some of the oldest land in the country, we live within and around some of the most ancient history, that began even before white man ever set foot here. With long histories, there's bound to be a few ghosts, especially when you add the sometimes violent events that happened here. So Freetown, you're not alone, we, your neighbors of the southcoast, also share in the wellspring of paranormal that is just part of what this area really is. With all of us working together, I think answers may be right around the corner!!
(And I apologize, I know it's a bit long, but I never edit these, I have too much writing going on to edit short stories, but I did want to try to make this point. I hope I got it across!!)
