Okay jenny a/k/a ghostjunkie, I will try and answer your question about why spirits linger......From what I have found in my research, there are a number of reasons why spirits linger on after death.
They may not even know that they are dead, they may have unfinished business or wish to stay around to help a loved one. In the case of a residual haunting, it's not actually the spirits that stay behind, but the energy of something horrific that had happened, imprinted on the land, house, car, room, etc. that plays itself over and over again.
That's pretty much it from what I have found out. Anyone have anything else to add?

Pretty nice! I think you could imagine almost any type of scenario, and yes, that could cause a spirit to stay behind. Being murdered and the murderers run free could be one reason. So many things that people do, so many cruel ways to kill each other or ourselves, the list of reasons a spirit stays behind, I think are endless. I like the way lildeb describes the types of hauntings, that helps you to differentiate sometimes, if it seems aware, it's possibly someone with some type of unfinished business or what have you, and if it's not aware or interacting, it's more likely residual and any human essence never existed, only the imprint of whatever happened that imprinted on time or a place. Great questions, and as always, great answers from lildeb!! I'd love to hear more on what other's opinions are though, I'm always open to new thinking and ideas!!
