Do any of you remember hearing stories when you were kids about creepy things that happened on Wolf Island Road in Mattapoisett? I am working on a project about American Folklore and I would like to invove some local tales in my research paper.

I certainly do. I'm in the middle of cooking dinner and I have company right now, but I promise I'll come back and tell you the stories I've heard about it. I grew up very close to there so it was something I've heard about since I was a kid.

Two stories stick out in my mind when you say Wolf Island Rd. One I loved and one was just so urban legend to me even as a kid I didn't believe it. The first is about a mustang. The second is reminiscent of one of those 'hook' stories you'd tell around a campfire. A long time ago, a young kid crashed his mustang into a tree around a corner of Wolf Island Rd. There may even be some fact to this part of the story, for if talk of Wolf Island comes up with someone about a generation older than I, they tell the name of this person, but it's not always consistently a mustang. They say that you must go to the big corner on Wolf Island Rd at midnight, park, and blink your headlights 3 times. Up ahead you'll see headlights that blink back at you, three times. Then you'll hear the roar of a souped-up 351 cleveland racing towards you as the headlights speed directly at your parked vehicle. Then the headlights go right through your car and if you're quick enough to look in the rearview mirror, you'll see the taillights as they disappear around a bend. If you're brave enough, you'll get out of your car to find tire tracks have been laid out on your roof....... The other story is based on a supposed hanging, but I've never found any hard evidence that someone was hung out there. It may or may not be true, knowing the history of this area, and what happened to the Wampanoags out here, it is truly possible, I just haven't found it in writing. They say many years back when this country was young, that some people were hung out on Wolf Island Rd. I've heard conflicting stories, some say it was the colonists hanging some Wampanoags, and others say it was the Wampanoags hanging some colonists. If I ever do find confirmation of this hanging, I'll let you know. There once was a couple who had decided Wolf Island Rd would be the perfect spot to go parking. It's very quiet, and back in the day, there were very few houses built upon it. After their passion was spent, the boy turned the key to his gas guzzling muscle machine, only to find it wouldn't start. Not wanting to break his curfew, he decided to walk and get help. He left his love behind to wait in the car while he hiked the spooky dark, deserted woods. The young girl fell asleep waiting for her boyfriend to return to the silent woods where she lay stretched out on the front seat looking up at the stars. She woke with a start, with no sense of how long she had lain asleep. Scared and worried for her boyfriend, she sat up looking around at the deep dark woods around her. She decided to get out and stretch her legs and maybe have herself a stoop close by in a bush. The door creaked open in the stillness, and she got out slowly on legs half asleep. Stretching her arms out, she stretched her neck lifting her eyes to the sky.... ....and that's when she saw them, hanging from the trees above the car. Ghostly spectrals of people hanging from ropes by their necks. Screaming in terror she jumped back into the car, slid across the seat into the driver's seat. In a hurried panic she turned the keys in the ignition, the engine, to her great joy roared into life. Jamming the gear stick into gear, she spit dirt 40 feet behind her as she sped away from there, never to return....... Ellis-Bolles Cemetery, Wolf Island Rd....
