This week, we'll be talking haunted prisons and hospitals (since we're going to jail on Tuesday)
But due to college basketball, the show will air on WBSM from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

I'm on an investigation tonight, but I will try and call in and share what it was like investigating with Matt Moniz at Eastern State Penitentiary ;D
I'll even share what happened the 2nd night of investigating when I got "molested" by something lol Seriously, I was touched in a very "personal" spot after I had been provoking in Cell Block 7.

Well, guess you get what you get when you provoke something - whether dead or alive. Why do people feel the need to provoke spirits?

I personally never got the provoking idea either, to me you get more bees with honey than vinegar! I've gotten a bit more used to it, since more people seem to want to provoke nowadays. I think it's more of a desperate act from people who desperately want to get evidence to show the world, so I can understand where they are coming from in a way, even though I don't use the method. But if ya think about it lildeb, this may be a good thing, LOL! If more people are worried about getting their parts grabbed, maybe less people will provoke!
Hmm, rein, hope your parts are no worse for the wear!!!

Being grabbed, poked, or punched is not an LOL matter; provoking spirits is just plain disrespectful. I agree that it is one of many desperate measures that some people will go to because they hope to be able to make some kind of a capture and get recognition for it.
My question is this, is provoking a spirit worth the potential danger you are putting yourself and/or your team into? Is the potential danger worth some little snipit of possible evidence that you might be lucky enough to get? If you answer 'yes' to this, then you have never been attacked by a paranormal force, or you are trying to be a big shot, or maybe you just do not care.
Remember, there are other ways, safer, to gather evidence.

I don't know about that, I think some people consider provoking an acceptable way to do paranormal investigating. Of couse I don't agree with it, and I think that many of them may find more trouble than they bargained for using that method. I don't want to provoke anything living or dead into anger, or unnecessary violence, but many think this is the way to do things. To me, it's not acceptable in my group, but I can't tell others what to do, I can only suggest, and hope that the ones who are provoking stay safe out there! Much better to be safe than sorry!!

I have found in some places you do need to provoke a little to bring them out. I've never been punched, hit, pinched, etc. I don't take it THAT far. I usually just challenge them to show themselves because I'm not afraid of anything I can't see. I may call them a coward or something similar, but I don't go so far as to encourage something to actually do any physical harm.

Hon, I have never had to provoke a spirit in my life to produce activity. Some people call everyday practices such as evp work, provoking. I don't, but I don't think a negative outcome is worth provoking. Sometimes they just don't have the energy, or conditions to manifest, and there will be no activity at all in even the most haunted location. I think in investigative work, there should be a lot of patience, not all times are prime times to record evidence. No I can't tell you all of the factors that come into helping activity manifest itself, but I don't think making it happen is worth the possible outcome.
I was bothered by a demon infestation for over 22 years, it started when I was a child. I know first hand the power that some of these entities can possess. Let me tell you from experience, that it takes alot to get rid of one of these demons, and it is an experience I can say I'd rather do without. I can imagine what a 'normal' childhood could have been like if only I had not gotten tossed and abused by a demon. Yes, sounds farfetched doesn't it? But it happens, it really does. I've found over the years of research that I've been involved in that these things aren't really so rare as I had at first thought, unfortunately!! Every day, somewhere in this world, there are creatures, just like the creature that bullied me for years, are attacking others, on a regular basis. Is the evidence worth all that? From my standpoint, and with my memories of what this thing did to me over the years, and then later, boyfriends of mine, and even later, children of mine, I would have to say NO!!!
Yes, I am an investigator, and I am the found of Whaling City Ghosts, so yes, I do put myself in contact with spirits often. I enjoy interacting with them, but I have ground rules. Nothing dark is able to come into contact with me, I do not allow it. I also try to be respectful, and work with them on their terms. I woul NEVER provoke any of the spirits I come into contact with. I am kind and gentle with all spirits! Hell, I frequent The Armory, here in New Bedford, ya know, the one that the sound man from TAPS got smashed by with his own equipment, because he was being provoked. If I brought you to visit "my" Armory, you would notice that when I speak to him I call him 'sir' or 'sergeant', never 'MF' and that I ask questions gently, and let him know how I feel that he has been trapped in the building. I think I've been rewarded with gentleness back from him, and what I think are some good evp's. One in which he calls me 'Red' for my hair, which I think is a term of endearment from him, and a vote of trust between us!
So what I want to say, is as long as I think you're out there, provoking spirits, I'm going to think you're unsafe out there, and that will make me worry about you! I can't help but feel affection, and a bond with all my ghost hunter buddies out there, and you're now considered a friend, would you make me worry so?? Why don't you try it my way, find yourself a ghost magnet, treat them gently and with respect, and see if you don't get some great evidence to share with us all?? How's that sound, and any time you want a good magnet, come on up to Mass, I will show ya my world, LOLOL!! But really, please, think about it, being hurt, or having the terror of an inhuman is NEVER worth the risk, hon!!!

I totally agree! I have never had to provoke or challenge a spirit to show itself. If it wants to show itself it will, if not - oh well. I am not the type to bully the living, let alone the dead; and am not in any great need to capture EVPs that I would resort to such a thing.
Provoke, challenge, bully - it basically all means the same thing; to force something/someone to do something you want them to do. And how do you know how far is too far to take it with a spirit when you put a challenge to them. If the adage, "as in life so in death" is true, you may be provoking the spirit of a person who lashed out when provoked. You never know.
Putting yourself and/or your team in danger just is not worth it. But, if it is what some people think they need to do........do not complain when things start going bad for you. Aneaglesangel, you can worry about the people who provoke if you want to, I sure won't! I am not saying that to be mean, just being truthful. If a person knowingly puts themselves in harms way, then they get what they get. Maybe it will teach them a hard lesson.

I am definitely in the "non-provoking" camp.
Read my Ouija board story for all the details, but I was "walked-through" by a demonic entity when I was 16, it only happened once, and I'd like to keep it that way. (See my Ouija board post for the gory details).
If someone gets hurt or inadvertently "invites" a negative entity to oppress them, an investigation isn't worth it.
It's just my opinion, I could never be comfortable with that technique, but I know that many don't feel that way.

Your demon story does not sound farfetched. Thank goodness, I have never, and hope to never, encounter a demonic entitity. If I go on an investigation where that is what presents itself, I'll leave the premises and call one of several people who can handle that sort of thing. The Ouija Board, I have never and never will use one of those, not even as a child when someone had one at a sleepover or whatever. They are extremely dangerous and don't want to open THAT door.
As far as when I provoke, I don't call them names like "MF" or anything of the sort. I don't do it to be confrontational. Its in questions, like at ESP (pardon, I'm going to be blunt here), "Did you enjoy sex in the showers?" or "Were you someone's girlfriend in here?" (notice, I don't ask if he was someone's "b*tch")Or I might say "I'm not afraid of anything I can't see, so if you don't want me in your cell, make a noise for me or move something and I will go". In Gettysburg, I'll ask questions specific to what a Yankee Soldier's views might have been to what might be a Confederate Soldier and vice versa. Its not my intention to degrade them. I don't say things like "You liked sex in the shower, didn't you?" or anything that comes across degrading like that.
I've also heard stories of people provoking not realizing they were doing so. For example, a group that I am friends with was doing some work in Gettysburg. One of their members is an Afro-American female. The area they were in was a Confederate strong hold and her presence was enough to provoke. The other group members asked her to leave the area and explained what they thought was going on. Once she left the area, everything was fine.
There is one other member of my group that asks provoking questions like myself and we tend to work together, although if someone else is working with me, I always ask if they mind if I start "poking" around in my questions. If someone is not comfortable, I don't. Its not something I do all the time. For instance, at Point Lookout, just having a normal conversation with another "live" person in the room is enough to get the "residents" to start talking and having them put their "two cents" in.

We have captured EVPs when just having 'live' conversations. If you are going to pick up an EVP you will do it whether you ask quesitons or not, at least that is how I see it. If a spirit wants to communicate, it will regardless of what you are saying.
As far as demons go; just because something may present itself as as being 'nice' does not mean that it does not have ill intent. Remember that demons are sneaky and they will win you over by being nice, then when they have a hold on you they turn. Just something to keep in mind.

Demons...yes demons are sneaky alright, they'll even hide, waiting years for that one shot in......
Until you know for sure, and how can you, it's never good to take a chance that one of those 'nice' spirits is a demon in disguise! Though I do know it's good to know your enemy, so please, learn as much as you can about them, I like to see everyone safe, no matter how they use practices and protocols in the field, but that is one thing I'd like to see become a bit more standardized. Then everyone would be safe!
