Stonehill College, in North Easton, Massachusetts was built in 1948, by the Congregation of
the Holy Cross. As a college that carried the tradition of the Holy Cross, it sought to help
develop the abilities of its students and cultivate concern for the dignity of all people. The
college is the home of the largest shovel collection in the world, and is the location of the
world's only known 'bull cemetery'! Unfortunately, years of development on the site has either
destroyed or buried the marker stones. The Stonehill College is also the proud home of the
'Skyhawks' and all athletic teams go under that name. They say the name was changed not to
reference a bird or animal, but to pay homage to a type of plane, Frederick Ames, the first
president and a past owner of the college, used to fly. Keeping to college traditions, there
are rumors that the college is haunted. There are two stories told about Stonehill College
that I have recently learned about. Are the stories true? Or are they just urban legends
told at an alumni party to scare freshman coming into the school? I'll let you be the judge
of that!
Of Sally Blair Ames, I've heard and read conflicting reports. Some call her Sarah Ames and
say she drowned in the pool. Others call her Sally and say she drowned in the pond outside
the college. Some say her spirit haunts the inside of the college, others say that her ghost
haunts the pond on the outside of the buildings. Christopher Balzano reports that odd voices
are heard in the dorms and the cemetery, where lights are also seen. They say the reason
stonehill College does not have a swimming pool on-campus is because of the drowning of Sally
Ames, but the college says the proposal to add a swimming pool was brought up many times
during the '90's but a lack of interest was shown by the student body.
Between owners, the grassy field of the college was used as a landing strip. They say
a small plane crashed into the pond several years ago. The pond is now the site of a blue mist
that will later turn into a heavy fog on the anniversary of the crash. As the fog begins
to clear, you can see the body of the pilot struggling to get out of the cockpit. It does seem
to be true that the field was used as a landing strip, and one of the first owners was a flying
enthusiast, but as of yet, I haven't found any report of the plane crashing there. As I have time
I am going to see if I can find anything on it. If a pilot did indeed die in a crash there, I'd
say there'd have to be a paper trail.
During the time I spent there last Saturday with Mmecurie, I cannot say that I saw or heard the
ghosts of Sally Ames, or an unknown crashed pilot of the past. I can't say that I have any evidence
to show you at this time, though I am still working on the audio from that night. If Sally Ames
or that pilot are indeed there, I hope they spoke up to tell us that! But though I didn't see any
spirits of people long gone, I can say one thing for sure! Their burping pond sure is creepy at
night!! I think mmecurie will concur with me on that one!! So are these urban legends? Until
someone finds evidence of it, I guess we'll have to wait and see!!
