Kids giving her the name. Well that would figure. Seems like they got confused, or did not know what they were talking about. Calling someone a "White Witch" is a good thing, and seems that this woman would only have that name, if in fact, she was Wiccan. Either that, or it just sounded like a cool name to put to someone when so many bad things were happening. >^o.o^<

Hi there this was an interesting read and a white witch is usually known for helping others so I wondered too how white witch became her name. Exactly lildebcc she would have to be wiccan and used the craft to have saved or helped someone as part of her legacy.... Clara

Weren't a lot of midwives herbologists? I've heard many of them were white witches also, but I'm not sure if you could call yourself one back in this day and age?!

Well, I know some midwives, and they are not herbologists. So I guess the answer to that, from my point of view, is no, they are not all herbologists. Looks like people, throughout history, have used and probably will always use the term "Witch" as a generic term for anything considered 'abnormal' (whatever that term actually means). To a lot of people, the word brings up visions of everything that is spooky, mysterious, and/or evil. Also makes a story appear better when you put the word 'Witch' in it. OY! >^o.o^<

Oooh, they are two different women! I figured there was just some confusion since rumors and stories usually grow as they are re-told. So there was a Mary, and there were a bunch of children who died. But did they execute this "Mary" as a witch? I can't see them doing it that late, just like everyone made fun of the people who thought there was a vampire attacking a family here in Rhode Island. I'd say by the 1860's things like that were unheard of! Funny how stories get mixed up, eh?? That's one of the Spirit Society's goals, to bring the truth about hauntings out! We're working on a searchable database of REAL hauntings, with real research, etc. We're all working on our own areas and all, but I have noticed that these types of stories sure can get mixed up and exaggerated!! As far as i know there was never a executeion she just left town

Well, aneaglesangel, I would not say that that is "how it got started." As karl said, "...just speculation." Probably a good guess, but we will never know for sure.
I guess sticking to the facts and truth, just as they are without embellishments, just is not good enough for some people. Personally, I would rather know the true, basic, even boring story than to be bombarded by words that stretch and change a story to make it sound better.

Sometimes I've found it can be a pain in the butt getting through all the stories to get down to the truth of something! I guess that's how these urban legends grow, LOL! I'll have to tell you guys the stories my sis told me about Wolf Island Rd.! You'll see why I thought it was just urban legends!! Big wild tales of horror have hidden whatever the truth is behind that place. I'm sure it won't be the last time that happens, or we run across it!!
There's a story told around here, of a nursing home on Main St. in Fairhaven, that if you drive by the ghost of some woman who got hit by a car there will change your radio station. Umm, hello, guys, haven't you ever noticed the radio reception is horrible over there anyway?? I've driven past it alot trying to see if there was anything to it. I can't get a decent channel on at all, except fun 107, which broadcasts out of Fairhaven, down the street almost, LOL, from this nursing home. Not many of the channels come in. It's said that if you play a rock channel, she'll change it to big band music. The station doesn't change, and it doesn't go to big band music, it just doesn't come in, in the first place, if you ask me!

Awesome!! There's a few phantom car stories I've heard. One is a very old black car, and it would run people off the road too!! Wonder if there's anything to this green truck story! Be interesting to get pics of it, without getting run off the road, that is!! The other phantom car story I heard goes with Wolf Island Rd.
This is the story my sis told me when I was a little girl. Supposedly someone died on Wolf Island Rd. in a 1969 Mustang. They were supposedly drag racing and he didn't make a corner and hit a tree. (I don't know if there's any truth in that part of it.) But my sis would say, that if you went down Wolf Island Rd. at midnight, and came to that corner, you were supposed to stop and blink your lights three times. Suddenly, out of nowhere, headlights would appear, a revving engine would be heard. Then the squeal of tires as the phantom mustang comes straight at you! Just as it's about to hit you, it disappears, laying tire tracks over your roof!! Muwahahaha!! Great urban legend story, if you ask me, LOL!!
