Have you ever wondered if curses were real? Well, as you can see by this gravestone from Yarmouthport's Ancient Cemetery, Mary C. believed that they were. I have been going to this cemetery for about 20 years, and this stone has always interested me. This is what I know: Mary C. died in 1985 at the age of 79. Whaling Port is a housing development with very nice single-family homes, that is located across the street from the main entrance of this cemetery. A friend of mine grew up around this area, but not in Whaling Port. From what he tells me, as legend has it........Mary C. was a bit reclusive and didn't associate with many people in the area. Whether people were mean to her and talked trash about her really isn't known. I have not been able to find out any information other than this over the years. Guess people just don't want to discuss it. In all the time that I have been going to this cemetery, I have not once noticed any flowers or remembrances put at Mary's grave. Sometimes, when I go there, I put a little something there. But when I go back again whatever I put there is usually gone. SIDE NOTES: The orange and green colored splotches you see in the photograph is lichen. The stone was in the shade, so I took the photo with a flash. The shiny spot that you see is the flash bouncing off the reflective surface of the stone. The black lines that you see around the inscription, are the remnants of someone's attempt at doing a gravestone rubbing - and a bad job at that! GRAVESTONE RUBBING101 - cover the entire stone with paper so you don't mark it up. >^o.o^<

Aneaglesangel, if you want to meet up and go to the Barnstable Tavern, just name the date and time and send me an email. Either that, or let me know if/when you plan on making it to one of the dinner tours. >^o.o^<

Well, she was either really picked on, or just had it in her mind that she was picked on. I wonder if she could have had Alzheimer's or something like that, that would have distorted things around her. Whatever it was, I've had the hardest time finding out anything. But I'll keep looking.
I love showing this stone to people. Everyone I have shown it too has been freaked out to some extent. Some don't even like to be near the stone.
You never know what you're going to find when you walk through a cemetery. >^o.o^<

That stone is sad, I feel bad for her. It makes me want to visit her too and let her know even though I never knew her I feel for her. Thats just sad.
People probably did make her life hell, thats horrible I hope she found peace.
That just goes to show the moral of this story is do not judge a book by its cover, you never know what another person has been through in their lives. Unless we have walked in another's shoes we should not cast stones..
