As this show is old, I'm sure this has been brought up before, but a search didn't reveal any information (although, I suck at searches, so I probably didn't word it correctly). Anywho...has any one noticed a moaning sound around the 4 minute mark on this podcast? It is totally out of place and takes place while Christopher is talking.
Like I said, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but just in case no one has noticed give it a listen and let me know what it could be.
P.S. Great Show. I think it is the best show of all the ones I've found via iTunes. Keep up the great work. I just wish you were on more often!!

I've reviewed that spot in the podcast a few times, and I'm going to say it's the sound of my microphone's crane arm as I was moving the mic around. I can't be totally sure, but after the first few listens, that's what I think it is. That crane arm is very noisy and it's hard to move the mic around during the show without it causing noise (you'd think I'd remember to WD-40 the damn thing!) and these were some of our earliest days doing the show, before we realized things like we can cut the mic before we shift it and nobody would be the wiser.
Also, sometimes in the old shows you'll hear a low conversation if you listen very carefully "underneath" our show. That's the network feed running, before we realized how to fully turn it off (and we might be the only ones at the station that actually do so).
That's just my initial explanation--usually the mic moving around is a deeper sound, but we'll check it out further and get back to you if the conclusion changes.
It's also worth keeping in mind, too, that this was before we had Keith Johnson bless the studio for us, and in the days before that, random noises, computer misfires, and more were actually kind of common.

I've listened to that show before, I have a tendency to re-listen to older shows for me fix, and didn't notice it. Now that you mention it, I can see how it could be a mic crane arm, or other device in need of lubrication.
But, when it's 3am and you're lying in bed (with all of the lights out) and you've been listening to ghost-casts for a couple of hours and your half asleep and you hear that noise, well, let's just say a change of underwear would be in order! ;D

Actually , before Keith blessed the studio - what I found really interesting was that everytime you guys talked about demons or demonology, audio production stuff happened to go noticeably wrong to us listeners.

It was funny to have something weird happen and then have Tim blame the ghost.
Tim, did you guys ever try to capture EVPs before the studio was blessed, or do any kind of investigation?

Funny, I've actually heard of a few haunted radio stations, LOL! One of my moderators at Spirited Society, her dad used to work in a studio and she recalled quite a few events for us that had happened there. I believe that many more than just her dad had experiences there. Hmm, I'll have to find out if it's still a studio or not, and if activity still occurs there. I don't think her dad works for the show anymore.
Hmm, I'm curious too now, I don't remember them saying anything about doing an investigation at the studio??

This is just Christopher Balzano checking in. Aside from me moaning, which happens quite often, it might have very well been the mic. I think when I was in there recently Tim said it was the first show he stood up instead of sitting down. Might account for some mic adjustment so early in the show, especially because we didn't get in the studio until five minutes before the show because of basketball.

Hello Christopher...great interview and web site by the way.
I know that something mechanical wouldn't have the same frequency range limits as the human voice. So, in investigating, what tests, if any, can you do on an EVP sound that you believe to be mechanical in nature to exclude that possibility?

Oooo! Good question! I'd love to hear how others check this. I do know when I'm doing my evp's I watch where the spikes and lows are. Most of my recordings, the human voices are huge spikes. When I get something I think is an evp, there aren't even any spikes, it seems like the decibal range is way lower than the human voices are. I'd love to know more about this though, since now I'm trying to become more audibly inclined, LOL!

Tough to say...Something mechanical wouldn't register, but there might be something on the EVP that is not the voice. In looking, a voice is not the only proof that something odd is happened.
It is very hard to analyse what you get if it is not something clear. I don't have that kind of ability with my software. I try to find baselines that at least try and explain something. For instance, in this case, try to check Tim's voice. If it gets louder, it might be contextual evidence that he moved the mic.

Of course, if this were recorded in a cemetery we could assume that this sound was probably paranormal. Since it was recorded in a busy environment I see that it makes it difficult to be certain what this sound is/is not. So, if you were trying to investigate this sound what would your steps be? I assume you would try to move the mic stands around to duplicate the sound. And, unless someone was fooling around you could discount any living person being the source.
Let's say you couldn't duplicate the sound via the mic stands. Where would you go from there?
Now, I'm not trying to argue that this sound is paranormal; I'm just trying to apply these protocols to investigating EVPs in general.
