That was yet another really good podcast this week guys, thankyou. Just a minor point about the alien voice that came over the telly over here. Mat Moniz mentioned that television here in England is run by the Government. That's only true of the BBC. I think the alien voice came over an independent television channel . Each region has an independent channel which shows commercials and probably at that time their output signal was not as strong as BBC, however it will still have been mighty strong ! So who knows how that signal managed to get over it. I noticed all kinds of other signals were mixed in with it. That can be explained because the time it happened was the hight of the sunspot cycle and lots of weird radio/tv things happen at that time. The frequencies in those days were different to what we use today for tv so maybe that has something to do with it...weird !

Thank you for setting me right about the way that your TV networks are run. I knew that the BBC was run by the gov. but was not sure about all of the stations. Do you remember when it happened? There also was a broadcast that broke into a UK TV network that had nothing to do with aliens, but was part of an american TV show from Texas? The part that made it strange was that it was a LIVE show, and had gone off the air in the US, something like 7 years prior. Thanks again for putting us right on details.

Hi Matt ! No worries. I don't remember the incident you mention but i will look into that thanks. I can't really remember the the alien voice incident. As a radio ham i am very interested in this sort of thing.Radio signals can do some weird and wonderful things. At the hight of the sunspot cycle i can listen to Police/rescue signals on winter afternoons on my handheld scanner from YOUR country ! Amazing. Each afternoon it last about 3 or 4 hours then fades out.Sometimes you will get several stations all on the one frequency. Also when the pressure is high here we often get tv pictures from continental Europe, usually Demark, Holland etc which can completey block out our own programming. By the way Matt we are FORCED here to pay a fee to the BBC every year wether we watch their programmes or not ! If i for example only watch independent channels or even if i only own a VCR i HAVE to pay the BBC the fee because i am capable of receiving their signal ! Beleive it or not they actually jail people that don't pay ! The fee is currently arounf £130 ....and mine is due ! All the best mate...Leester

Wow! That stinks Leester! Even if you don't watch, you have to pay?? I hope it's not alot of money!! Over here, if you want decent tv reception, you've got to pay for cable or satellite, but at least we have a choice!! I'll have to ask my buddy unicorn about this, she's never mentioned it, though she did tell me as soon as you are 18 you have to pay a tax every year just to be a citizen of the country??

Isn't one English pound equal to about $1.50 American? At least that is what I paid for something I got from England on Ebay last year.
I did not have cable or satellite here for about 4 years. Was too busy to watch tv and could not see payng for it. I just had an antenna on my roof; we are talking about 10 years ago; and a friend of mine taped a lot of shows for me. Other than that, what channels I could get depended on the weather and the time of day it was. During the day I would get one or two Boston stations, real fuzzy. At night, I would get one station out of Providence, RI - free TV,not so good anymore.

Hi Luanne, yep that would right.Probably the Community Charge your friend is talking about there.Got to be one of the most hated taxes here...mind you it's forrunner the Poll Tax caused dreadful riots here a few years ago...they were forced to scrap that one ! And yep LILDEBCC that exchange rate sounds about right. The TV licence we are forced to pay is currently around £130. per year . It rises EVERY year. The BBC have detector vans that roam the streets of Britain equiped with equipment to catch non-payers . They don't care if your aged 18 or 98 ...you don't pay it's either a massive fine or jail. Totally unfair. Wouldn't be so bad if it was a subscription choice like we have with cable or SKY tv but even if you only have equipment to watch cable you STILL gotta pay the BBC.

Wow! Ouch!! That hurts, I had no idea it was so expensive! Guess from now on I won't complain about paying my satellite tv bill, LOL! Though I have to admit, it's cheaper and I like it better than cable, LOL!! I can't imagine them chasing signals around in a van!! That's what I call feisty, LOL!!!

Just goes to show you - one way or the other - whether you have a Parliament or a Republic-style democracy, some things NEVER change!

lildebcc - how the heck did you work the 13.00 deal? I don't even want to tell you what we spend - we have to have 1 premium channel in order to get the broadband discount. Thank goodness our awful company (my town was the island with the different cable company surrounded by a billion other towns with the BETTER cable company) FINALLY got bought out by the better company.

It is very easy; it is called basic cable. No extra stations, just the basic package.
I find that I really do not miss all the other stations that I had. If there is something that I really want to see on a station I do not have, I ask a friend to tape it for me.
It is a choice.......if you "need" all those channels you are going to pay for it.
